From a first pet for the kids to something a little more unusual, we have all sorts of lovable furry friends. Friendly, hand-tame pet rats are still our specialty.
Small mammals are the most hands-on pets we sell. They learn who their people are, come to the front of the cage, and many enjoy being held.

Why they make great pets
- Hands-on and affectionate. Rats and guinea pigs bond with their people.
- Social and playful. Rats and guinea pigs do best with a buddy of their own kind.
- A classic first pet for learning daily care: food, water, fresh bedding, playtime.
- Less space and cost than a dog or cat.
- The honest part: cages need cleaning every week, and lifespans vary. Hamsters and rats live about 2 to 3 years; rabbits about 8 to 12.
A good first pet for kids?
Yes, for kids 5 and up with an adult involved. The CDC recommends that children under 5 avoid contact with rodents, which includes hamsters, gerbils, rats, mice and guinea pigs.
At any age, supervise handling, have kids sit and hold the pet low over a lap, and wash hands with soap and water afterward. Rabbits are delicate and many don't like being picked up, so they suit families happy to sit on the floor with them.
Cool facts
- Rats laugh. When tickled, they make ultrasonic chirps too high for us to hear, and they come back for more.
- Rabbit and guinea pig teeth never stop growing. Chewing hay all day keeps them worn down.
- Guinea pigs can't make their own vitamin C, just like people. They need it in their food every day.
- A hamster's cheek pouches stretch all the way back to its shoulders.
